Botanical name: Thottea dinghoui Family: Aristolochiaceae (Birthwort family)
Whorled-Stamen Bowl-Flower is a perennial herb with
leaves 15-17 x 6-8 cm, elliptic, tapering, hairless above, bristly
below; nerves 5-8 pairs. The species name honors Ding Hou, a botanical
expert on Thottea. Flowers are borne in racemes 10-20 cm long, arising
from the base of the stem, rising up or trailing, puberulus. Flowers
are alternate, yellow; bracts linear; tepals 3, yellow, 6 x 4 mm,
ovate, free, spreading, hairy on outside. Stamens are 15, in two
whorls, which is a diagnostic feature. Filaments are fused at base;
anthers linear, yellow; ovary hairy; ovules numerous. Capsules are 6 x
0.5 cm, 4-valved, purple; seeds many, yellowish-brown. Whorled-Stamen
Bowl-Flower is endemic to Kerala.
